Jos Buttler has announced his resignation as England’s white-ball captain after the team’s elimination from the Champions Trophy 2025. The decision was made ahead of their last league game against South Africa. Buttler, who took over the captaincy from Eoin Morgan in 2022, cited the team’s poor performance in the tournament as the reason for his resignation. Despite winning the T20 World Cup in 2022, England’s results in both formats have declined, culminating in early exits from major tournaments. The partnership between Buttler and coach Brendon McCullum did not yield the desired results, with England losing nine of their 10 white-ball games in 2025. Buttler expressed his disappointment but believes it is the right time for a change in leadership. The ECB has yet to announce a successor for Buttler as the white-ball captain.
