The newly launched JioStar, a joint venture between Viacom18 and Star India, will not offer complete free streaming of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on its platform. Users will only be able to watch a few minutes of an IPL match without a subscription, after which they will be directed to a subscription page with plans starting at 149 rupees. This change in streaming terms for the IPL, the world’s richest cricket league, comes after the merger of Reliance and Walt Disney’s India media assets last year.

JioStar aims to provide a better viewing experience with close to 3 lakh hours of entertainment and live sports coverage. Subscription plans for JioHotstar start at 149 rupees for a basic plan and 499 rupees for an ad-free version for three months. The platform covers premier tournaments like ICC events, IPL, and WPL, as well as grassroots cricket and other global sporting events.

The Reliance-Disney venture competes in India’s media and entertainment market with more than 100 TV channels and streaming apps. JioHotstar offers features like ultra-HD 4K streaming, AI-powered insights, real-time stats overlays, and multi-angle viewing to enhance the viewing experience for sports fans.
