Mumbai Indians’ fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is making a solid comeback after a three-month break due to a back injury he suffered during India’s tour of Australia earlier this year. Coach Mahela Jayawardene is confident that the 31-year-old will only get better with more game time.
Bumrah had experienced back spasms during India’s final Test in Sydney in January, which led to him being ruled out of subsequent series against England and the Champions Trophy. However, he made his return to the field in Mumbai’s recent match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League.
Although Bumrah went wicketless and conceded 29 runs in his four overs, Jayawardene noted that there were still many positives to take away from his performance. He mentioned that Bumrah looked in good form and that his pace and execution were impressive.
Jayawardene explained that Mumbai’s strategy was to gradually reintegrate Bumrah into the team, with Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar being preferred choices to handle the new ball in the match against Bengaluru. He emphasized the importance of giving Bumrah time to adjust and regain his rhythm after such a long break from the game.
Despite the challenges of transitioning from Test cricket to T20 format, Jayawardene expressed confidence that Bumrah will continue to improve as he gets more opportunities to play. He acknowledged Bumrah’s exceptional skills but also highlighted areas where there is room for growth and development.
