Fans attending Indian Premier League (IPL) matches at the venue will now have to pay more for tickets as the Central government has raised the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on IPL tickets. The tax rate on IPL tickets has been increased from 28% to 40%, making a ticket with a base price of Rs. 1000 now cost Rs. 1400 instead of Rs. 1280. This 40% tax rate is the highest slab in the current GST framework, usually applied to ‘sin goods’ and luxury items.
Interestingly, attending international cricket matches in India could become more affordable under the newly revised GST regime as the 28% GST on tickets for international matches has been eliminated. A Press Information Bureau (PIB) release clarified that while 40% GST is applicable to ‘sporting events like the IPL’, it does not apply to ‘admission to recognized sporting events’, which attract 18% GST if the ticket price exceeds Rs. 500.
These changes in GST rates will take effect from September 22, providing fans with a heads-up on the increased costs they may incur when attending IPL matches. The move is likely to impact the overall fan experience and attendance at IPL matches, with fans having to shell out more money to watch their favorite teams in action. The revised GST rates aim to streamline taxation on sporting events and provide clarity on the applicable rates for different types of events.
