Plans are underway for the Indian Premier League (IPL) to resume as early as next weekend, following the announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. An IPL franchise official received a communication to stay prepared for the return to action shortly after the ceasefire was confirmed. The overseas players who were in mid-air at the time of the announcement are expected to return for the resumption of the tournament. The IPL Governing Council is set to meet in the coming days to finalize the revised schedule.
The IPL was suspended with 13 league matches and the four playoffs remaining to be played. The decision now lies with IPL officials on whether to restrict the matches to fewer venues or spread them out. The final, originally scheduled for May 25, is likely to be pushed back due to the break in the schedule. International commitments of overseas players may also impact the scheduling of the remaining matches.
The possibility of immediate resumption comes as a relief for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), eliminating the need to find an alternate window in September. The availability of overseas players amidst a packed international calendar remains a challenge for the organizers.
