Punjab Kings has had a tumultuous history when it comes to leadership in the Indian Premier League (IPL). With 16 captains in 17 seasons and no playoff appearances since 2014, the franchise has struggled to find a stable leader. However, there is hope that Shreyas Iyer, their 17th skipper for the upcoming 2025 season, can change their fortunes.
Iyer, who was acquired for a hefty sum of Rs. 26.75 crore at the auction, led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in the 2024 season. Now, the 30-year-old will look to bring success to a team that has been captained by cricketing legends like Adam Gilchrist, Yuvraj Singh, and R. Ashwin.
While Gilchrist holds the record for leading Punjab in the most matches, Yuvraj boasts the highest win-loss ratio among all the franchise’s captains. With a rich history of leaders, Punjab Kings will be banking on Iyer’s skills and experience to guide them to the playoffs and beyond in the upcoming season.
