Shreyas Iyer made history by becoming the first-ever captain in the Indian Premier League to lead three different franchises to a playoff qualification. His leadership skills were on full display as Punjab Kings qualified for the playoffs in the 2025 season, ending an 11-year drought. Iyer, who was released by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the mega auction, was signed by Punjab Kings for a whopping INR 26.75 crore. He repaid the faith shown in him by leading PBKS to the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar criticized the unfair treatment Iyer received after leading KKR to a title win last year. Gavaskar emphasized the role of the captain in shaping the team’s performance and questioned the lack of credit given to Iyer for the previous season’s success.
Iyer’s stellar performance extended beyond the IPL, as he was the leading run-scorer for India in the Champions Trophy. He continued his form in the IPL, scoring 435 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 174.70. Under his captaincy, PBKS secured a playoff berth by defeating Rajasthan Royals. Overall, it has been a season to remember for Shreyas Iyer, both on the domestic and international fronts.
