Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes that MS Dhoni should only play in the IPL as the captain of Chennai Super Kings, as he is a “different beast” when leading the side. Ganguly’s comments came just before CSK officially announced Dhoni’s return as captain for the remainder of IPL 2025. Despite criticism of Dhoni’s late-order batting position and fading form, Ganguly emphasized the importance of Dhoni’s leadership for the team.
Dhoni’s return as captain comes at a crucial time for CSK, who are currently struggling with four consecutive defeats. Ganguly acknowledged that while Dhoni may not be the same player he was in 2005, he still has the ability to hit sixes and make valuable contributions to the team. Ganguly also expressed concern about Kolkata Knight Riders’ home performance at Eden Gardens and the lack of ‘home advantage’ in this year’s IPL.
Looking ahead to cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Ganguly welcomed the opportunity for Indian cricketers to compete for Olympic medals. He believes that cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics will inspire young players to dream of winning gold, silver, or bronze medals for India. Ganguly did not comment on the controversial issue of ‘home advantage’ in the IPL.
