Former India captain Sourav Ganguly pushed for MS Dhoni’s return as captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) just before it was officially announced for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. Ganguly emphasized that Dhoni’s impact in the IPL is most significant when he leads CSK, describing him as a “different beast” in the captain’s role.

The leadership change was prompted by Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury, who sustained a hairline fracture in his elbow during a match against the Rajasthan Royals. Despite his valiant efforts, Gaikwad was eventually ruled out for the rest of the season, leading to Dhoni’s reinstatement as captain.

Dhoni’s return as captain comes at a crucial juncture for CSK, who are currently struggling with four consecutive defeats. Ganguly highlighted Dhoni’s ability to still hit sixes despite his age, expressing confidence in his leadership abilities.

Under Dhoni’s captaincy, CSK has won the IPL title five times, with their most recent victory in 2023. His strategic prowess and calm demeanor have been instrumental in CSK’s success, making them one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.

As CSK prepares to face the Kolkata Knight Riders, there is optimism that Dhoni’s return will revitalize the team and steer their campaign back on track.
