In a recent interview, Varun Chakaravarthy discussed the impact of head coach Gautam Gambhir on the Indian cricket team. Gambhir, who took on the coaching role after the 2024 T20 World Cup, was initially met with skepticism due to his lack of prior domestic coaching experience. However, he quickly proved his worth by leading India to a Champions Trophy victory in white-ball formats.

Chakaravarthy, who had previously worked with Gambhir at Kolkata Knight Riders, praised the coach for instilling a ‘Spartan’ mentality in the team, where losing is not an option. He emphasized that under Gambhir’s leadership, mediocrity is not tolerated, and players are expected to give their best on the field.

Since Gambhir’s arrival, Chakaravarthy has become a key player in India’s T20I squad and even reached the number one ranking in the ICC T20I bowling charts. Despite being dropped from the ODI squad for the Australia tour, Chakaravarthy revealed that Gambhir’s focus for him included bowling longer spells and improving his batting skills. These adjustments not only helped him perform effectively in the Champions Trophy but also prepared him to contribute more with the bat in domestic cricket.
