Cricket Australia is considering avoiding Marvel Stadium earlier in the summer in future Big Bash League (BBL) seasons, following criticism from Melbourne Renegades legend Aaron Finch. Finch suggested that the club should consider moving their matches to Geelong due to issues with the venue’s outfield and pitch conditions. The concerns arose after a recent game between the Renegades and Perth Scorchers was affected by a patchy outfield and slippery conditions.

Similar problems were also observed at Sydney’s Engie Stadium during the Sydney Smash, highlighting issues with multi-purpose venues hosting cricket matches. BBL boss Alistair Dobson expressed disappointment with the presentation of Marvel Stadium and acknowledged the trade-offs that come with using such venues. He mentioned the possibility of rescheduling games at Marvel Stadium later in the season to ensure a better playing surface.

Despite calls for the Renegades to move their matches to the MCG or join forces with the Melbourne Stars, Dobson emphasized the importance of maintaining the distinct identities of the two Melbourne teams. While Finch’s proposal to permanently relocate matches to Geelong may not be feasible, CA is exploring options to address the issues at Marvel Stadium to enhance the BBL experience for fans and players alike.
