Cricket Australia is currently discussing the possibility of introducing Christmas cricket to the Big Bash League. Despite record audiences and attendances at the start of the season, there is a growing demand for matches on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

CA chief executive Todd Greenberg expressed his interest in festive cricket, stating that it could be a brilliant addition to the league with the right teams and market. Greenberg emphasized the importance of working with the Australian Cricketers’ Association and players to ensure their involvement and support.

The agreement between CA and the ACA in 2018 allows for cricket to be played on Christmas, specifically as a local derby between Sydney and Melbourne teams after 4pm. Players also have the option to withdraw from Christmas cricket on religious grounds.

If Christmas cricket were to be implemented, it is likely that the Sydney Sixers would host the Sydney Thunder at the SCG, while Melbourne teams would play at Marvel Stadium due to the Boxing Day Test being held at the MCG.

The aim is to create a special and memorable occasion for both players and fans, similar to how Anzac Day matches have become iconic in the AFL and NRL. By carefully considering player input and market dynamics, Cricket Australia hopes to successfully introduce Christmas cricket to the BBL in the near future.
