Dhoni previously took over as CSK captain in IPL 2022 under similar circumstances, when the team was struggling in the first half of the season. The move to appoint Dhoni as captain for the third time was announced by CSK head coach Stephen Fleming ahead of their match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
