Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have put an end to speculation by announcing that Ruturaj Gaikwad will continue as their captain for the upcoming season, despite trading for Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals. Gaikwad took over the captaincy from MS Dhoni in IPL 2024 and has been a key player for CSK, scoring 2502 runs in 71 matches with a strike rate of 137.47, including two centuries and 20 fifties.

Sanju Samson, who captained RR since 2021, was seen as a potential captaincy option for CSK, especially after Anil Kumble endorsed him as a suitable leader following Dhoni’s retirement. However, CSK’s decision to stick with Gaikwad as captain indicates their trust in his leadership abilities.

Gaikwad’s standout performance in IPL 2021, where he scored his maiden century and helped CSK win the title, earned him the Orange Cap and Emerging Player of the Year award. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to an elbow injury. On the other hand, Samson has been a consistent performer for RR, accumulating 4027 runs in 149 matches.

CSK’s confirmation of Gaikwad as captain sets the tone for the upcoming season, showcasing their belief in his leadership and batting prowess.
