There is a possibility of a Big Bash season opener taking place in India, specifically in Chennai, according to reports from SEN Cricket’s Tom Morris. Cricket Australia has expressed a “bold ambition” to stage the first game of the next season in India, with two senior CA staffers reportedly flying to India to assess the logistics. While no BBL teams have been formally briefed on the matter and the deal is not yet finalized, Morris noted that this plan is more than just a concept within Cricket Australia.
Although it is uncertain which teams will participate in the game, the Perth Scorchers are considered a likely choice due to their time zone. The annual game in Chennai is believed to have a positive impact similar to the NRL’s Las Vegas venture, as reported by Morris.
In addition to this potential international venture, Cricket Australia is also exploring the option of selling minority stakes in BBL clubs. Boston Consulting Group was commissioned to evaluate the current model and future structure of the competition, with recommendations including privatization and expansion.
Overall, the idea of a Big Bash season opener in India is still in the early stages of development, but it represents Cricket Australia’s broader strategy to embrace the influence of Indian cricket. This move could potentially open up new opportunities for the BBL and strengthen ties between Australian and Indian cricket.
