Punjab Kings (PBKS) has had varied outcomes in their recent encounters with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL. In their last two meetings, PBKS pulled off contrasting wins – a record chase of 262 last year and defending the lowest total in the tournament’s history of 111 runs on Tuesday.
The match at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium saw a thrilling finish as Marco Jansen dismissed Andre Russell to secure a 16-run victory for PBKS. Yuzvendra Chahal played a pivotal role in the home team’s remarkable comeback, taking four crucial wickets including Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Ajinkya Rahane, who had a promising partnership after early setbacks.
Despite a strong start by KKR, Chahal’s spell turned the tide in PBKS’s favor as he dismissed key batsmen and put pressure on the opposition. Glenn Maxwell and the rest of the bowling unit also played their part in restricting KKR’s chase.
In their innings, PBKS faced a top-order collapse due to Harshit Rana’s impressive bowling, which led to them being restricted to a modest total of 111 runs. Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine further contributed to KKR’s bowling effort by picking up crucial wickets.
Although PBKS struggled, Shashank Singh’s brief cameo helped them cross the 100-run mark. However, a mix-up between the lower-order batsmen resulted in a quick end to their innings. Despite the low total, PBKS’s bowlers stepped up to defend it successfully and secure a memorable victory over KKR.
