Reports suggest that Mumbai Indians’ star pacer Jasprit Bumrah will miss the first few matches of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season as he continues to recover from a back injury. Bumrah is expected to join the MI squad by April, after missing the team’s initial three matches scheduled in March. However, there is uncertainty surrounding his return to match fitness, which may result in him being unavailable for additional games.
The 31-year-old last played during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia in January, where he sustained a lower-back injury during the fifth Test in Sydney. This injury forced him to sit out the second innings of the match. Bumrah was also absent from the recent ICC Champions Trophy, where India emerged victorious against New Zealand in the final in Dubai. Despite being named in the provisional squad, Bumrah was unable to recover in time for the tournament.
Having undergone back surgery in March 2023, Bumrah missed the IPL season that year. However, he made a strong comeback in 2024, claiming 20 wickets in 13 matches for Mumbai Indians before playing a crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph. Mumbai Indians, the five-time champions, will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Chennai Super Kings on March 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
