Cricket Australia has announced the introduction of multi-year contracts for international players in the Big Bash League, aiming to secure overseas talent for the entire season. Starting from 2025, players signing multi-year deals will be required to be available for the full season, including finals.

The emergence of rival T20 leagues like SA20 and ILT20 has made it challenging for BBL clubs to retain high-profile international players in January. During the recent BBL season, players like Colin Munro and Sam Billings left their teams to play in the more lucrative ILT20.

The new multi-year contract system offers international players more security and certainty about their availability. Clubs must still pick at least two overseas players in the draft, but they now have the option to sign one player on a multi-year deal without retention rules.

Players can also be signed above the platinum rate of $420,000, putting pressure on each club’s salary cap. Additionally, the WBBL has replaced its direct nomination rule with multi-year contracts to improve player retention.

Alistair Dobson, CA’s general manager of Big Bash Leagues, stated that the introduction of multi-year contracts aims to enhance the league’s global appeal and provide clubs with greater stability and planning capabilities. The move is seen as a strategic step to ensure the best players continue to compete in the Big Bash for longer periods.
