The ongoing turmoil surrounding the T20 World Cup has been attributed to the BCCI’s handling of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman’s exit from the IPL earlier this year by former ICC head of communications Sami-ul-Hasan Burney. The controversy began on January 3 when the BCCI directive led to Kolkata Knight Riders releasing Mustafizur without a public explanation, sparking outrage in Bangladesh. The government banned IPL telecasts and the BCB urged the ICC to move their T20 World Cup matches out of India. The ICC refused the request, resulting in Bangladesh being ejected from the tournament and replaced by Scotland. The PCB criticized the decision, accusing the ICC of double standards and threatening to review their participation. After deliberation, Pakistan decided to compete in the tournament but boycotted their match against India. Burney stated that the crisis could have been avoided if the BCCI had handled the situation more discreetly, avoiding public statements about Mustafizur’s removal from the IPL franchise. He suggested that private instructions to release the player would have prevented the escalation of the situation.
