Lucknow Super Giants spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi was fined 25% of his match fees and received a demerit point for his unconventional ‘letter-writing’ celebration after dismissing Punjab Kings batter Priyansh Arya. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) penalized Rathi for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during LSG’s match against PBKS at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Despite Rathi’s actions, PBKS emerged victorious by eight wickets.
Digvesh Singh admitted to the Level 1 offense under Article 2.5 and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. The controversial celebration occurred during PBKS’ chase of 172 when Arya was dismissed after attempting a pull shot. As Arya left the field, Digvesh mimicked writing a letter, which caught the attention of the umpires and drew comparisons to Kesrick Williams’ ‘notebook’ celebration.
Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammed Kaif, while commentating, criticized Digvesh’s actions. Although Digvesh performed well with the ball, taking two wickets for 30 runs in his four overs, the rest of the LSG bowling attack struggled as PBKS easily chased down the target in 16.2 overs. The win propelled PBKS to second place in the IPL 2025 points table, alongside RCB and DC, each with four points from their first two matches.
