The future of the Big Bash League is being examined, with a potential change to the cricket calendar that could see the T20 competition start during Christmas. Cricket Australia has enlisted the Boston Consulting Group to provide recommendations for the evolution of the BBL and WBBL, with one suggestion being an optimized schedule to ensure top Australian players are available for most of the tournament.
The BCG’s recommendation is for the Big Bash season to kick off over Christmas and the New Year to coincide with the Boxing Day and Sydney Tests, extending into February. The goal is for all of Australia’s cricket stars to participate in the tournament after the Sydney Test. However, with Australia scheduled to play in India in mid-January 2027, coordination between CA and the International Cricket Council will be necessary to execute the plan.
Additionally, the report suggests a higher salary cap to attract top players and considers alternative forms of investment and ownership, including private ownership. This move aligns the BBL with other global competitions like the Indian Premier League and England’s The Hundred. Other recommendations include potential expansion and different administrative structures.
CA is working closely with states, territories, Big Bash clubs, players, and commercial partners to evaluate the recommendations’ value and impact. While no decisions have been made yet, CA chair Mike Baird emphasized any actions taken would benefit the BBL, WBBL, fans, and Australian Cricket overall. CEO Todd Greenberg reiterated the league’s commitment to innovation and fan engagement, striving to ensure the BBL remains a top global sporting competition.
