Axar Patel has been appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals for the IPL 2025 season. The decision was announced on Friday, with Axar being the team’s top retention for Rs 16.50 crore ahead of the 2024 mega auction. Despite limited captaincy experience, Axar served as India’s T20I vice-captain in January 2025 and has led Gujarat in various matches, including the Syed Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophies.

Expressing his gratitude, Axar stated, “It is my absolute honour to captain the Delhi Capitals. I’ve grown as a cricketer and I feel ready and confident to lead this side going forward.” Last season, Axar captained DC in one match, which they lost to RCB. He played a crucial role in India’s Champions Trophy victory, showcasing his skills with both bat and ball.

Delhi Capitals will begin their IPL 2025 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants in Visakhapatnam on March 24. In the previous season, the team finished sixth in the standings, securing 14 points from as many matches. To strengthen their squad, the franchise made significant acquisitions at the auction, including KL Rahul for Rs 14 crore and Mitchell Starc for Rs 11.75 crore.

The DC squad for IPL 2025 includes notable players like Faf du Plessis, KL Rahul, Mitchell Starc, and Kuldeep Yadav. The team is eager to improve upon their previous season’s performance and compete strongly in the upcoming tournament.
