Chennai Super Kings off-spinner R. Ashwin has requested clarity from the team regarding his role for the upcoming IPL 2026 season before making any decisions about his future with the franchise. Sources have revealed that discussions have taken place between Ashwin and the management, with other franchises expressing interest in acquiring his services.
During the IPL 2025 season, Ashwin played only nine matches for CSK after being bought for INR 9.25 crore at the auction, where he picked up seven wickets at an economy rate of 9.42. Speculation has arisen about a potential trade deal with Ashwin’s former team, Rajasthan Royals, and reports have suggested that Sanju Samson may move from RR to CSK.
Ashwin addressed the rumors via his YouTube channel, stating that players have the right to seek clarity on their retention status. He emphasized that the news circulating is not originating from the players themselves, but rather from sources within the franchises. Ashwin also highlighted the process of player retentions, explaining that it typically involves contract renewals on a yearly basis.
The deadline for player retentions will be determined once the dates for the mini-auction preceding IPL 2026 are finalized. Trade deals, however, can be negotiated during the offseason. Ashwin’s future with CSK remains uncertain as he awaits clarity on his role within the team for the upcoming season.
