AB de Villiers recently shed light on the toxic player culture that plagued the Delhi Daredevils during the early days of the IPL. Despite possessing a talented roster, including legends like Glenn McGrath and Daniel Vettori, de Villiers revealed that there were “poisonous characters” within the team that led to their downfall. Reflecting on his time with the Daredevils, de Villiers mentioned the highs of playing alongside cricket icons but also the lows of dealing with internal turmoil.
After a successful stint in 2009, de Villiers found himself in and out of the team in the following season, ultimately being released ahead of the 2011 auction. He then joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he flourished and became one of the greatest batters in IPL history. De Villiers highlighted the difference in treatment between the two franchises, emphasizing the sense of belonging and support he felt at RCB.
The Daredevils, now known as the Delhi Capitals, have struggled to secure an IPL title since de Villiers’ departure. Meanwhile, de Villiers continues to be a key player for RCB, showcasing his talent and loyalty to the franchise.
